Biography
Professor Georgina Long AO, a 2024 Australian of the Year and leading Australian medical oncologist, is a sought-after media commentator, inspiring public speaker and passionate advocate of women working in STEM.
Through her illustrious career to date, Georgina has pushed boundaries and taken on challenges that others shy away from resulting in a significant shift in the fight against melanoma here in Australia and across the world.
Melanoma is Australia’s national cancer, and Georgina is ranked the world’s equal 1st melanoma expert in all fields and disciplines.
Thanks in part to her research and work, advanced melanoma is no longer a fatal diagnosis. For many patients, it is now a curable disease.
Georgina is Co-Medical Director of Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA), the largest melanoma research and clinical care centre in the world, and Chair of Melanoma Medical Oncology and Translational Research at MIA, The University of Sydney, and Royal North Shore and Mater Hospitals.
“I realised that the extraordinary is only achieved when we think big. We’ve got to think outside the box, we’ve got to take big risks”
