Biography
Ali is a must-see inspirational speaker! It is hard not to shed a tear in his session. His powerful story leaves audiences feeling amazed and that anything is possible. The sheer power of will and self-belief led Ali to overcoming significant obstacles at a young age, navigating through the unknown where giving up was not an option.
As a committed advocate for inclusion and opportunity, Ali Khan understands firsthand the deep inequalities that shape the lives of displaced communities. Born in Afghanistan into the persecuted Hazara community, Ali grew up amid systemic discrimination, violence, and exclusion. Ali then re-located to a neighbouring country with his family, and the violent attacks followed.
In 2013, Ali’s family knew they would have to do something drastic for Ali’s future. After a treacherous trip, with his survival was hanging in the balance, Ali arrived in Australia as an unaccompanied minor. This was a formative experience, and the journey paved the beginning of a life shaped by resilience, uncertainty, and determination.
With limited English and no family support, Ali rebuilt his life through education and perseverance. He went on to graduate from Monash University with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and now practises as a corporate lawyer at Gilbert + Tobin, specialising in mergers and acquisitions. His work is grounded in navigating complexity, performing under pressure, and delivering outcomes in high-stakes environments.
Alongside his legal career, Ali is passionate about creating pathways for others. He is the co-founder of CREATE (Centre for Refugee Employment, Advocacy, Training & Education), an organisation dedicated to empowering refugees and partnering with businesses to unlock diverse talent and foster inclusive workplaces. Through his advocacy and speaking, Ali draws on lived experience to inspire resilience, inclusive leadership, and a sense of belonging, encouraging individuals and organisations alike to turn adversity into purpose and impact.
Ali shares his extraordinary personal story on stages across Australia. He is a very versatile inspirational speaker for a wide variety of events and conferences.
Testimonials
Ali’s presentation to our team was genuinely powerful and deeply moving. His journey from arriving in Australia as a refugee from Afghanistan having witnessed atrocities to becoming a corporate lawyer at a top-tier firm is a remarkable testament to human endurance, courage, and determination. His story was a timely reminder that many of the privileges and freedoms we enjoy in Australia— access to education, safety, opportunity, and the rule of law—are not universal, and should never be taken for granted.
Ali’s story is truly inspiring; a story of courage, hope and not taking no for an answer. Ali’s presentation was authentic and engaging from start to end and clearly illustrated the power of never giving up.
I heard Ali Khan speak at the Gilbert + Tobin corporate team offsite in October 2025. Ali’s presentation on resilience was one of the most powerful and memorable sessions of the event.
What resonated most was not just the scale of the obstacles he overcame, but the mindset he adopted at every stage, such as persistence, courage, and ambition grounded in gratitude. For many of us, the session prompted a mindset shift.
