Biography

Mathew Thompson is one of Australia’s leading sports broadcasters across television, radio and podcast platforms.

As Chief Commentator for Channel Nine’s Wide World of Sports, Mathew is heard as the primary voice of Rugby League around the world. He ascended to this prestigious role following the retirement of commentary icon Ray Warren.

Mathew is the key pillar of Nine’s coverage of NRL club matches, State of Origin and the NRL grand final. He is also a member of 2GB’s hugely successful Continuous Call Team rugby league coverage.

Mathew was a key pillar of Nine’s coverage of the 2024 Paris Olympics as head swimming caller and also covering the weightlifting.

He has recently covered WWOS Australian Summer of Golf featuring the Australian PGA and Australian Open as well as international cricket.

In recent years, Mathew has been a prominent figure in sports podcasting. His weekly NRL podcast with NRL legend Phil Gould, Six Tackles with Gus, generates a large, engaged and loyal audience base.

Mathew has presented and editorially produced two seasons of ACRA award nominated long-for feature podcast, Stories of Origin, based on the games interstate rugby league rivalry between NSW and QLD.

He is currently recording a new podcast series titled ‘Road To Paris’ which highlights the careers of Australians legendary Olympics.

Mathew is revered for accuracy and versatility. He seamlessly transitions between television and radio broadcasts to cover a range of vastly different sports.
