Biography

Andrew McCullough played 309 NRL games over a 14 year career. His journey took him from the heights of debuting for the Brisbane Broncos as a teenager and playing in the State of Origin arena, right through to the lows of season ending injuries and grand final heartbreak.

Andrew was born and raised in Dalby, a small town west of Brisbane. Like most country kids he played various sports but Rugby League always had his heart. He owes his great passion for Rugby League to his Dad who spent most weekends travelling hours to get him to games and competitions.

He was offered a scholarship with the Brisbane Broncos at 13 years old. This opportunity was followed with a few more years of sacrifices before the Broncos asked him to relocate for his final year of school.

Moving away from everything he had grown up knowing, including his parents was very much outside of Andrew’s comfort zone. He moved from a school of 400 students in total to a school with more students than that just in his grade alone.

Fortunately for Andrew, this leap of faith really paid off and by the end of that year he started his first NRL pre season as part of the squad. Fast forward 14 years and Andrew had played 309 NRL games, 260 of those for the Brisbane Broncos, he achieved a childhood dream of pulling in the maroons jersey 4 times and enjoyed a small stint in Newcastle and Sydney.

This successful career didn’t come without periods of heartbreak, most notably the 2015 NRL Grand Final where the Broncos lost their chance of holding up the premiership trophy in the last 5 seconds of the game. Andrew also overcame a number of injuries throughout his career but none more difficult than an ACL tear in 2017.

Although very challenging at the time, these were all lessons of resilience and self-belief, both areas that Andrew is now passionate about sharing with the next generation.

Currently Andrew has a role at the Brisbane Broncos as a skills coach for the academy system.  Andrew is also heavily involved with SEN sports radio and enjoys any opportunity he has to share his journey of triumphs, sacrifice and set backs with people from all walks of life.

Andrew is available for Moderated Q&A’s for corporate events, community events, and schools events.
