Biography
Dr Mary Revelas is an expert speaker on the genetics of longevity and so we can age better and with improved health outcomes.
Dr Mary Revelas is a distinguished geneticist whose career spans microbiology, genetics, and the biology of ageing. Originally from South Africa, Dr Revelas began her scientific journey researching antibiotic resistance in Tuberculosis, focusing on mutations in the rpoB and arr genes—work that contributed to understanding the mechanisms behind drug resistance in a disease that deeply affected her homeland.
After relocating to Australia and raising a family, Dr Revelas shifted her focus to the science of ageing, driven by a passion for improving public health outcomes. She joined the Genetics & Epigenomics Group at the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing (CHeBA), where she specialised in the genetics of exceptional longevity and successful ageing. Her research has explored the genetic architecture of long, healthy lives, identifying key longevity-associated genes and examining their relationship to cardiovascular and metabolic health through advanced genetic scoring techniques.
Dr Revelas earned her PhD with distinction, receiving the prestigious Dean’s Award for Outstanding Contribution for her dissertation, “The Genetics of Exceptional Longevity and Successful Ageing.” Her work has been published in high-impact scientific journals and has contributed to the global understanding of how genetic and lifestyle factors intersect to influence ageing.
A passionate advocate for science communication and public empowerment, Dr Revelas is committed to translating complex genetic insights into actionable strategies for healthier living. Her collaborative work at CHeBA and beyond continues to inspire innovation in ageing research and public health.
